Description

A successful commercial hydroponics vegetable farm specialises in greenhouse production of Peppers. They use advanced precision-farming techniques to consistently produce high quality peppers throughout the year. They are looking for a Production Intern to join their production team.

Internship Overview
This 12-month structured internship offers hands-on experience in commercial greenhouse pepper production. The programme provides exposure to all core operational areas, including crop production, packhouse operations, fertigation and data management, integrated pest and disease management (IPDM), and assistant grower responsibilities. Interns will develop technical and leadership skills essential for modern controlled-environment agriculture. The intern will report to the Junior Grower / Production Manager, with guidance from department supervisors during rotations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Crop Production (±2 months): Perform crop work such as twisting, pruning, deleafing, sanitation, crop establishment, and harvesting. Conduct daily crop checks and irrigation inspections.
  • Packhouse Operations (±2 months): Assist with sorting, grading, packaging, and dispatch of peppers. Apply quality standards and understand cold-chain handling and traceability.
  • Fertigation & Data Management (±2 months): Support fertiliser mixing, water treatment, and irrigation hygiene. Monitor EC, pH, and irrigation volumes, and capture operational data accurately.
  • Integrated Pest & Disease Management (±3 months): Conduct pest and disease scouting, assist with cultural and chemical control practices, and participate in IPDM planning.
  • Assistant Grower & Compliance (±3 months): Support labour supervision, climate and irrigation management, compliance processes, and procurement activities.

Expectations

  • Demonstrate professionalism and a strong willingness to learn.
  • Accurately capture and report data.
  • Participate in daily production meetings and provide feedback.
  • Rotate weekend duties approximately every 4–5 weeks.
  • Submit weekly reports summarising observations and suggestions.

Qualifications

  • A relevant qualification (National Diploma or degree) in agriculture, horticulture, plant science, or related field.
  • Basic understanding of plant production, irrigation principles, and crop protection is advantageous.

Skills Developed

  • Technical accuracy in irrigation, fertigation, crop handling, and IPDM practices.
  • Observation and diagnostics for crop stress and pest identification.
  • Data discipline and interpretation.
  • Communication and adaptability in a dynamic production environment.
