AgriCAREERConnect in Stellenbosch:
A Day of Inspiration, Insight & Industry Connection
In July 2025, the Fismer Hall at Stellenbosch University buzzed with energy as students, graduates, and industry professionals gathered for the AgriCAREERConnect (ACC) event, an initiative by Agrijob to bridge the gap between academia and the agricultural industry. With vibrant conversations and a packed programme, the day was a celebration of opportunity, curiosity, and collaboration.
A Dynamic Programme Led by Passionate Voices
The event was expertly hosted by Melissa van der Merwe, whose warmth and professionalism as MC set the tone for the day. Companies across the agri-food value chain could showcase who they are and what they are looking for when hiring, and also sharing their businesses’ visions, from input supply to value-adding and agribusiness.
- During the first session focusing on horticulture, crop production & input supply, students heard from industry specialists representing Koppert SA, Blueberry Hill Farms (pepper production), Citrus Academy, Freshmark (Shoprite Holdings) and ExperiCo. Students spontaneously asked insightful questions to panel members, resulting in dynamic conversations.
Although the international vegetable seed company Rijk Zwaan SA was scheduled to participate, their representative was unfortunately unable to attend. Their banner was displayed, and students are still encouraged to send inquiries to majella@agrijob.co.za . Rijk Zwaan is still keen to respond and engage with students.
- Moving deeper into the value chain, session 2 focused on agribusiness, commercial, value-adding & marketplaces. Vibrant discussions and industry insights came from: Fresh Produce Exporters’ Forum (FPEF), Unlimited Group / Lona Group, Simply Garlic, Funky Ouma and Freshmark (Shoprite Holdings).
Voices from the Day
Melissa van der Merwe (MC)
“The energy in the room was electric, and the conversations between students and industry professionals were inspiring. It’s clear that the future of agriculture is in good hands.”
Marianne van der Laarse (Managing Director, Agrijob)
“This is exactly what AgriCAREERConnect events are all about, connecting industry with about-to-be-graduates. Industry needs bright and energetic young people in their businesses, and fast. And graduates will come to the party; they will surprise you; your business will start to flourish. A big thanks to the enthusiasm and energy of Melissa van der Merwe (a MC of note!), and the organisational leadership of Monika Basson from the AgriSciences faculty at SU, this event was a huge success.”
Elsamari Lombard (ExperiCo)
“We had the privilege of engaging with passionate students at the AgriCAREERConnect event at Stellenbosch University. It’s always exciting to share what we do at ExperiCo and to see the enthusiasm for agricultural research and innovation.”
Raeesa Perry and Nadine Maarman (Freshmark, Division of Shoprite Holdings)
“Representing Freshmark at the AgriCAREERConnect event was a rewarding experience. Engaging with students who are passionate about agriculture and eager to make a difference was truly inspiring. These young minds are the future of our industry.”
Student Reflections
Lunga Ngobe (Stellenbosch University Student)
“I had an amazing time at the AgriCAREERConnect event. It was eye-opening to hear directly from industry professionals and learn about the many career paths available in agriculture. I left feeling inspired and motivated.”
As a fourth-year Plant and Soil Sciences student, Lunga found the panel discussions particularly valuable. They offered clear insight into:
- The skills employers are looking for,
- The realities of different work environments,
- What various companies do across the sector,
- Opportunities for internships, vacation work, and bursaries.
“It was incredibly helpful to hear directly from employers about how to prepare for job applications and the transition into the workplace,” she added.
Emma Nunn (Stellenbosch University Student)
“Thank you to Agrijob and the AgriSciences faculty for hosting such a fantastic event. I really appreciated the opportunity to connect with companies and learn more about the industry I’m preparing to enter.”
Networking That Matters
Beyond the panel discussions, students had the chance to engage one-on-one with company representatives during dedicated networking sessions. These conversations often sparked ideas, opened doors, and planted seeds for future careers.
Looking Ahead
With the success of the Stellenbosch event, the momentum for AgriCAREERConnect continues to grow.
As Marianne van der Laarse noted, “Looking forward to next year’s event already!”
