Description

A leading fresh produce trading and export business is looking for an experienced Commercial Manager – Berries to build, scale, and lead its berry category. This is a senior, entrepreneurial role with full commercial ownership, requiring a strong blend of procurement expertise, sales leadership, and strategic decision-making.

The role suits a commercially driven individual who thrives in building his/her supply networks, growing markets, and managing high-value categories end-to-end.

 

Key Responsibilities

Procurement & Supply Development

  • Develop and manage a reliable network of berry growers and suppliers
  • Negotiate pricing structures, supply agreements, and volume commitments
  • Plan seasonal procurement strategies to ensure quality and continuity
  • Monitor crop forecasts, yields, and market conditions

Sales & Market Expansion

  • Build and manage a diversified customer base locally and internationally
  • Develop and execute sales strategies to grow revenue and market share
  • Negotiate commercially sound customer agreements
  • Identify and lead entry into new markets and channels

Commercial Strategy & Category Ownership

  • Full responsibility for category performance and profitability
  • Analyse pricing, margins, and market trends
  • Set and track targets, KPIs, and performance metrics
  • Optimise product mix and logistics to maximise returns

Operations & Stakeholder Management

  • Work closely with logistics, quality, and operational teams
  • Ensure compliance with export standards and customer specifications
  • Represent the business at industry events and supplier meetings

 

Minimum Requirements

  • 5–10+ years’ experience in fresh produce commercial management
  • Strong background in berries or high-value fruit categories
  • Proven track record in procurement, sales, and negotiation
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Valid passport and willingness to travel internationally (±3 trips per year, including Far East or Europe)
  • Strong English communication skills (Afrikaans advantageous)
